Okay…so you think you’re an advertising agency

We make looking for new business a real important part of what we do every day. We are not unique in this regard, anyone who has survived this industry will tell you the same thing.

What I’m finding as I look for new businesses to pitch, is that more and more people are thinking that this industry is sexy again. I remember back in the 80’s when marketing and advertising agencies were the hottest thing around and everyone wanted in. What happened then is what is happening now—everyone wants a piece of the pie. Folks with a Mac computer (or a PC in today’s world) and a kitchen table are pitching themselves as a full-service advertising agency; when, in fact, they are not.

Being a virtual agency is a trend in our business. Today, as I search for New Hampshire agencies on Google I find a bunch of folks who talk about their agency and all of its employees. I know for a fact that some of those “full-service” agencies have one or two people working for them. The reality is many are being a little deceitful. Having a bunch of freelancers that work for you when you need them does not make you a big agency. Hell, if I counted all the freelancers we use we would have well over 20 employees instead of the 13 we actually do have on payroll.

So if you’re looking for an ad agency I can tell you there a bunch of good ones in this state. When you interview them be sure to find out if they are truly full-service or one or two-man shops working out of their kitchen listing a bunch of employees that are really no more than freelancers.
